At Tommy's Lounge we understand the impact that PTSD, especially PTSD relating to military service can have a huge impact on your life. Our Operations Officer and one of our volunteer helpers both suffer with PTSD.
Tommy’s Lounge is a self funded, not for profit, safe space for all. Especially those with a military connection (Veterans and their Families). Unfortunately with the cost of living we struggle to meet the overheads but WILL NOT allow the doors to close after literally saving lives. Suicide rates amongst veterans is considerably higher than their civilian counterparts, and we work tirelessly to provide peer to peer support, work shops, gatherings, days out etc away from alcohol and drugs!
Please help us continue to save lives on a daily basis!
We are currently giving these cards to support veterans with PTSD for free. Continue reading to see how you can apply for a free card or, if you're a Tommy's Lounge supporter how you can help veterans in need with your support.
What is the card?
When you struggle with PTSD you may have flashbacks or can be triggered into a negative reaction by environmental (sounds, smells) or physical events (crowded spaces). People react differently, but the last thing the majority of veterans want at that point is to be surrounded or smothered by people who mean well and want to help. Communication can be adversely affected and this card is to assist in those moments.
Why give them away?
Veterans have served the country with pride and dedication. They have made sacrifices and experienced things that most people would struggle to imagine. More needs to be done to support veterans when they are out of service in these areas. Tommy's Lounge believes that no veteran should have to pay to get help and support, or be supported when in need.
How can I support a veteran?
The type of support varies by person to person, but our sister organisation, Behind the Heroes has some great short videos on how you can support veterans and loved ones with a mental health crisis. Click here to go to their support pages.
What is PTSD?
Someone with PTSD often relives the traumatic event through nightmares and flashbacks, and may experience feelings of isolation, irritability and guilt. They may also have problems sleeping, such as insomnia, and find concentrating difficult. These symptoms are often severe and persistent enough to have a significant impact on the person's day-to-day life. - Source NHS.uk
Why only veterans?
At present we only offer these cards to Veterans with prior military service (applicants will have their service verified before being issued with their card. Whilst Tommy's Lounge acknowledges that anyone can suffer with their mental health, our purpose at Tommy's Lounge is to support veterans.
